Secret documents leaked to the website WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was sentenced to 50 weeks in a London court. He was given the sentence on Wednesday for staying in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London after violating the terms of the bail.
British police arrested Assange in Ecuador's embassy last month and arrested him. He had taken refuge in the embassy to avoid arrest. Assange was in political asylum in seven years.
Judge Reuters reported that judge Deborah Taylor announced the sentence against Assange on Wednesday. At the time, Assange was in court. Assange is seen wearing black jacket and gray sweater. Judge Taylor said that Assange has violated the law by holding special privileges in the embassy and insulted the British judicial system.
Julian Assange was arrested on April 11th. In 2010, WikiLeaks released 200,000 US diplomatic cables and five million military secret documents. A few days later, a case was filed against him in Sweden for rape. The UK government wanted him to be handed over to Sweden for trial in the case. Then on February 6 last year, a UK court decided to cancel Assange's arrest warrant.
